Villa Grande
ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS MESA GRANDE
Villa Grande—originally known as Mesa Grande—grew from a redwood-era river settlement into a classic Russian River resort hamlet as rail travel made weekend and summer trips easy. In the early 1900s, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad served Mesa Grande with a station/stop, bringing visitors into the lower river corridor and helping spur the pattern of small cabins and vacation cottages that still defines the neighborhood. The community also gained a lasting civic anchor with its post office (ZIP 95486), established in 1921, and today Villa Grande remains a tiny, close-knit riverside community—still tied to recreation, second homes, and the broader Guerneville–Monte Rio resort area, but increasingly a mix of weekenders and full-time locals.
ENGAGE WITH OUR HISTORY
This gallery is just a small selection—the Russian River Historical Society is actively digitizing our extensive photo archives; if you have historic Russian River images or artifacts to contribute (or would like to donate to support this preservation work), we’d love your help.
